No matter how you feel about the nominations and snubs for the 91st Academy Awards, there’s one thing we can pretty much all agree on right now: Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross killed it while delivering the list of names and films that are in contention this year.

Without being too goofy or lackadaisical about it all, the two managed to be funny and cute but still show respect for the gravitas of the occasion — Nanjiani was just on the other end of this thing, waiting for his name to be announced for Best Original Screenplay for The Big Sick last year, so he knows how important it would be to those Oscars hopefuls tuning in.

Oscar Nominations 2019: See the Full List

Their banter about breakfast and being up at the crack of dawn was all so easy and sunny, and their playfulness played well throughout the whole segment. Which got us thinking … what if they just came back to co-host the actual Oscars?

As we know, the ceremony is currently down one show host, since Kevin Hart stepped away from the gig after some homophobic tweets of his resurfaced online, and time’s a-ticking down to showtime. So, sure, the Academy could just go host-free or bring in a gaggle of film favorites to host the various segments of the show, or even hire someone completely unexpected, but that was basically a slam-dunk audition for the job by Nanjiani and Ross if they want it. They could get up to that podium and just keep talking about suits and cereals, and we’d be delighted.

Judging by the social media reaction to the announcements, we’re not alone in this assessment here.

I, too, wish they had just booked Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross to host the actual Oscars.

I think Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross were auditioning to be the host of next year’s Oscars. And, I approve and as you all know, what I say, goes. ?#OscarNoms #Oscars

Um, can Kumail & Tracee host the actual Oscars please? Why is this not happening? #OscarNoms

Psst, Oscars, Ask Kumail and Tracee to host the actual show. You need a host, they’re charming and enjoyable to watch, you have them there now, what the hell are you waiting for? #OscarNoms

Whoever the host may or may not turn out to be, the 91st Academy Awards will air on ABC on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 8/7c.
